Under the tutelage of Sigmund Freud, she became the first female psychoanalyst. For those looking to learn about one of the most prolific proto-feminists in Europe at the turn of the century, the story of Lou Salome hits all of the marks.
Like protestant England, Germany was "Victorian" to the point of institutionalizing the silencing of intellectual women. They were good for marriage and children and hosting social gatherings.
Salome refused to wear any such traditional shackles and though it caused scandal after scandal, she remained single and childless, writing philosophical and psychological works that have since been nearly forgotten and nearly lost , but are surprisingly still relevant today.
The film is artfully directed, with strong period acting, and deep set decoration. There are several scenes with quick philosophical repartee that may seem heavy to those unfamiliar with the arguments, but for those with some philosophical background, they are a pleasure to hear.
Salome was surrounded by adoring men-- Ree, Nietzsche, Andreas, Rilke, Jung, Freud-- but she sacrificed romantic involvement in favor of intellectual fulfillment, the main exception being Rilke.
Later in life, she dated freely, like a man would, apologizing for nothing. She was admired for her intelligence and style in the salons of Vienna, Rome, and Berlin, and was a match for any man she encountered.
The narrative has a few slow points, like most period dramas, but overall it's an inspiration that this film got made.
It will likely send the curious to read more about her life and works. Like most historical biopics, the more you know going in, the more rewarding this portrayal becomes.

Rocket Perelman In fact, she was fascinated by the sermons of the Dutch pastor Hendrik Gillot, known in St. Petersburg as an opponent of Dalton's.
Gillot, 25 years her senior, took her on as a student, engaging with her in the fields of theology, philosophy, world religions, and French and German literature.
Together they studied innumerable authors, philosophers, theological and religious subjects, and all of this wide-ranging study laid the groundwork for her intellectual encounters with very well-known thinkers of her time.
Though disappointed and shocked by this development, she remained friends with Gillot. She had been interested in Nietzsche as a friend, but not as a husband.
He was happy to continue with the plans for an academic commune. This commune was intended to be set up in an abandoned monastery, but as no suitable location was found, the plan was abandoned.
After arriving in Leipzig in October , the three spent a number of weeks together. Nietzsche wrote of the affair in that he felt "genuine hatred for [his] sister".
Accounts of many of these are given in her volume Lebensrückblick. Her relationship with Freud was still quite intellectual despite gossip about their romantic involvement.
The two often exchanged letters. She has already published with some success Im Kampf um Gott "where she exposed the problem of loss of faith which had been her own for a long time ", several articles, and the study Jesus der Jude that Rilke had read.
I could have said literally what you told me when you confessed your love to me: Only you are real. That is how we became husband and wife even before we became friends, not by choice, but by this unfathomable marriage [ She introduced him to patrons and other people in the arts, remaining Rilke's advisor, confidante, and muse throughout his adult life.
She had developed heart trouble, and in her weakened condition had to be treated many times in hospital.
Her husband visited her daily; it was a difficult situation for the old man, who was himself quite ill.
After a forty-year marriage marked by illness on both sides and long periods of non-communication, the two grew closer. A few days before her death the Gestapo confiscated her library according to other sources it was an SA group who destroyed the library shortly after her death.
The pretense for this confiscation: she had been a colleague of Sigmund Freud's, had practiced "Jewish science", and owned many books by Jewish authors.
She authored a " Hymn to Life " that so deeply impressed Nietzsche that he was moved to set it to music. She was one of the first female psychoanalysts and one of the first women to write psychoanalytically on female sexuality, before Helene Deutsch , for instance in her essay on the anal-erotic , an essay admired by Freud.
However, she had written about the psychology of female sexuality before she ever met Freud, in her book Die Erotik She wrote more than a dozen novels, including Im Kampf um Gott , Ruth , Rodinka , Ma , Fenitschka — eine Ausschweifung , as well as non-fiction studies such as Henrik Ibsens Frauengestalten , a study of Ibsen 's female characters, and a book on Nietzsche, Friedrich Nietzsche in seinen Werken Among her works is also her Lebensrückblick , which she wrote during her last years based on memories of her life as a free woman.
In her memoirs, first published in their original German in , she goes into depth about her faith and her relationships.
Whoever reaches into a rosebush may seize a handful of flowers; but no matter how many one holds, it's only a small portion of the whole.
Nevertheless, a handful is enough to experience the nature of the flowers. Only if we refuse to reach into the bush, because we can't possibly seize all the flowers at once, or if we spread out our handful of roses as if it were the whole of the bush itself — only then does it bloom apart from us, unknown to us, and we are left alone.
The best, after all, is death. In Colombian author Santiago Gamboa 's novel Night Prayers , the epigram quotes Andreas-Salome: "What remained in the end, however the world or life changed, was the immutable fact of a universe abandoned by God.
